The Gates (TV series)

The Gates is a supernatural crime drama from ABC that ran for one season from June to September 2010. Low ratings led to its cancellation after those 13 episodes. The story centers on Nick Monahan, who relocates his family from Chicago to a wealthy, quiet gated community after taking a job as its police chief. He and his family soon realize the neighborhood is anything but normal—their new neighbors are vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural beings hiding in plain sight.

The main cast includes Rhona Mitra as Claire Radcliff, a vampire; Frank Grillo as Nick Monohan; Marisol Nichols as his wife Sarah; Luke Mably as Dylan Radcliff, Claire’s vampire husband; Travis Caldwell as their son Charlie; Skyler Samuels as Andie Bates, a succubus; Chandra West as the witch Devon Buckley; Colton Haynes as Brett Crezki, a werewolf and Andie’s ex; Janina Gavankar as deputy Leigh Turner, whose species is unknown but presumed to be one of the “living dead”; Justin Miles as deputy Marcus Jordan; McKaley Miller as the Monohans’ daughter Dana; Victoria Platt as Dr. Peg Mueller, a witch and rival to Devon; and James Preston as Lukas Ford, a teenage werewolf pack leader.

Development began in January 2009 when ABC considered the pilot script, but the series wasn’t announced until October of that year. It was an international co-production for Fox Television Studios, and the 13-episode order depended on foreign financing to make it viable as a summer replacement. Casting started in January 2010, with Frank Grillo, Luke Mably, Janina Gavankar, and Chandra West among the first announced. Marisol Nichols, Rhona Mitra, Victoria Platt, Skyler Samuels, and newcomer Justin Miles joined later, with Paul Blackthorne in a recurring role. Filming took place in Shreveport, Louisiana, beginning March 29, 2010, and was expected to run through August. Earlier reports had suggested the show might film overseas, possibly in South America. The soundtrack included music from various artists, such as indie folk singer Quinn Marston.

After the first season ended, rumors of cancellation spread, fueled by Frank Grillo’s tweets hinting his contract wouldn’t be renewed. In October 2010, several cast members confirmed the show was canceled and would not return for a second season.
